GLP-1 Boosters: What the Sellers Claim, and the One Trial That Measured Neither GLP-1 Nor Weight

Probiotic and fibre products sold as GLP-1 boosters, read against their own claim text on 2026-09-17. One seller states its product is not intended for weight loss; another sells the same idea as weight loss without side effects. The only randomised trial behind a named formula did not measure GLP-1.

A GLP-1 booster is a probiotic or fibre supplement sold on the idea that it helps the gut release more of the body's own GLP-1. It contains no GLP-1 drug, and the sellers mostly say so. Where they differ is on what the product does next — and on that question the sellers of products built on the same premise do not agree with each other.

We read the claim text on four sellers' own pages on 2026-09-17 and set it against the published record: the one randomised trial behind a named formula, and the PubMed literature on GLP-1 and probiotics. This page reports what each says. It does not rank products and makes no recommendation; decisions about supplements alongside any medication belong with a prescriber or pharmacist, as our editorial standards set out.

The same premise, sold three different ways

All four products rest on one idea: that particular bacteria or fibres encourage the L cells lining the gut to release GLP-1. What each seller says follows from that idea is where they part.

The widest gap is between the first two rows. One seller footnotes its GLP-1 claim to preclinical studies and states the product is not intended for weight loss. Another offers the same mechanism as an alternative to prescription injections, without side effects. Both cannot be describing what the evidence shows, and the more cautious statement is the one that matches the record below.

What Pendulum's own customer figures are

Pendulum's page reports that 91% of users "reported reduced overall food cravings" and 88% "reported fewer sugar cravings". The footnote attached to both reads: "Based on a consumer survey of 274 people taking GLP-1 Probiotic for six weeks." A consumer survey has no placebo group, and people who buy a product and answer a survey about it are not a random sample. The figures are the seller's report of its customers' impressions, and the page labels them that way.

The one randomised trial behind a named formula

Pendulum is the only seller of the four whose formula traces to a published randomised trial. It is worth reading in full, because it is a real trial and because what it measured is not what the product is sold on.

Perraudeau and colleagues, BMJ Open Diabetes Research & Care, July 2020 (8:e001319, NCT03893422):

  • 76 adults with type 2 diabetes, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, 12 weeks
  • mostly on metformin; per-protocol analysis on 16 placebo, 21 and 21 in the two active arms
  • two formulas: WBF-010, three strains, and WBF-011, inulin plus five strains (Akkermansia muciniphila, Clostridium beijerinckii, Clostridium butyricum, Bifidobacterium infantis and Anaerobutyricum hallii)
  • primary outcome: total glucose area under the curve over 180 minutes after a meal

Three statements in the paper itself define what this trial can and cannot support:

  1. "GLP-1 levels were not directly measured." The authors measured insulin during meal tests as a marker of GLP-1 action and report that the trend toward higher insulin secretion "was not statistically significant."
  2. "There was no observed effect on body weight."
  3. "The limited sample size and intersubject variability justifies future studies designed to confirm and expand on these observations."

The authors' competing-interests statement reads: all authors "are employees and stock/stock option shareholders of Pendulum Therapeutics." That is declared, as it should be, and relevant to how the result is weighed.

The trial formula is not the product

WBF-011, the arm that reached significance, contained inulin and five strains. The GLP-1 Probiotic page lists three: Akkermansia muciniphila, Clostridium butyricum and Bifidobacterium infantis. The three-strain formula in the trial, WBF-010, did not separate from placebo. We did not find a published trial of the three-strain product as sold. The paper also reports that two of the clostridial strains were poorly detected in stool, so whether every listed strain reaches the gut in a form that matters is itself an open question in the company's own data.

What the wider literature holds

A PubMed search for records with both GLP-1 and probiotic in the title, run on 2026-09-17, returned 19 records. Sorting them by what they study:

  • At least seven research papers and one published correction describe genetically engineered bacteria built to carry a GLP-1 gene, among them Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactococcus lactis, E. coli Nissle 1917 and Clostridium butyricum constructs tested in mice and rats. These are laboratory tools for delivering the hormone itself. They are not the products on a shelf, and a search result mentioning a "GLP-1 probiotic" in this literature very often means one of them.
  • Most of the rest are cell or animal studies, including a 2013 Journal of Biological Chemistry paper proposing butyrate-induced GLP-1 secretion and a 2020 study of composite probiotics in db/db mice.
  • One is a human randomised trial with GLP-1 as a measured outcome: a probiotic yoghurt given to obese adults already on a low-calorie diet (Food Science & Nutrition, 2022). It is a food, not one of these supplements, and the participants were dieting.
  • One is a 2026 review.

So the mechanism has a body of preclinical work behind it, which is what Pendulum's footnote says. The step from that work to a measured rise in GLP-1 in people taking a shelf product is the step we did not find.

Why raising the body's own GLP-1 is a hard target

Even a product that did raise GLP-1 would be working against the hormone's half-life. The body's own GLP-1 lasts 1.5 to 2 minutes in the blood before enzymes clear it, which the liraglutide label states directly. The prescription drugs work because they are engineered to resist that clearance and last hours to a week. The strongest human result for any strain in this category — pasteurised Akkermansia reducing weight regain by about 2 kg over 24 weeks after a diet — is covered on the supplements page. It did not measure GLP-1 either.

The names are moving

Two of the four product URLs we requested on 2026-09-17 redirected:

A redirect is a fact about a URL, not proof of a reason. It sits alongside the pattern documented on our GLP-1 patch brands page, where patch sellers moved away from "GLP-1" in product names and one such rename is described in a federal complaint. In the booster market, the direction we observed is toward "support" and "cravings" rather than outcomes.

What a claim in this category can be checked against

Three questions sort the statements on these pages without specialist knowledge:

  • Was GLP-1 measured in people? For the named formula we read, it was not.
  • Was the product tested, or a related formula? Here, a related formula with more strains.
  • Does the seller's own footnote agree with the headline? On one page, the footnote says preclinical and not for weight loss. On others, weight loss is the headline.

What this page does not establish

  • Absence of a trial is not proof of no effect. It means the effect claimed has not been shown in the published record we could find.
  • We read four sellers' pages. Other products exist, and claim text changes; every quotation here is dated 2026-09-17.

The only randomised trial we found behind a named booster formula measured post-meal blood glucose in 76 adults with type 2 diabetes and found a modest improvement with one formula. The paper states that GLP-1 was not measured and that body weight did not change. That trial also tested a formula that differs from the product now on sale.

Are GLP-1 boosters the same as Ozempic?

No. Ozempic contains semaglutide, a prescription drug that activates the GLP-1 receptor for about a week per dose. A booster contains bacteria or fibre and is intended to influence the body's own hormone, which lasts 1.5 to 2 minutes in the blood. They are different categories of product regulated under different rules. One booster seller we read pitches its product to people who find injections unaffordable, which invites the comparison without making it.

Are GLP-1 boosters safe?

In the one randomised trial read for this page, side effects were limited to transient mild nausea, loose stools and diarrhoea in the first three to five days. That is a finding about one formula over 12 weeks in 76 people. Supplements are not reviewed by the FDA for safety or effectiveness before sale, and a probiotic taken alongside diabetes medication is a question for a prescriber or pharmacist.

Which GLP-1 booster is best?

We do not rank these products. None has a published human trial showing it raises GLP-1 or reduces weight, so there is no outcome to rank them on. What can be compared is what each seller claims and what evidence each cites, and the claims differ sharply: one says its product is not intended for weight loss and another lists weight loss as a benefit.

Is Akkermansia a GLP-1 booster?

Akkermansia muciniphila is the strain most often named in these products. Laboratory and animal work proposes that a protein it produces can stimulate GLP-1 release. The strongest human trial of pasteurised Akkermansia, covered on our GLP-1 supplements page, measured weight regain after a diet rather than GLP-1, and found about 2 kg less regain over 24 weeks.
